Throughout the week, coaches develop and record detailed task analyses for each skill required for the various sports. These assessments are sent to parents and physical education teachers, defining ability, and encouraging continued physical activity throughout the year.*

The following activities are offered at Camp Abilities Long Island:

Beep Baseball

Coaches and specialists will teach athletes the rulesĀ of the game, base running, batting and how to field a ball. Some athletes have been chosen to play with the professional Beep Baseball team, the Long Island Bombers.

Tandem Biking

During tandem biking, our athletes are able to choose between riding an individual or a tandem bike based on their vision and their comfort level. They also learn the many aspects of bike safety and maintenance in order to ensure a safe ride for all.

Goalball

Goalball is a Paralympic sport specific to children and adults with visual impairments and here athletes are taught the rules of the game, techniques for diving to block the ball, as well as, how to roll a ball to score a goal during a game.

Swimming

Throughout the week, athletes practice improving their swimming skills and have the opportunity to try new skills in the water that they may never have been able to do before, such as, jumping off of the diving board. Swimmers are encouraged to work towards achieving Red Cross swimming level skills.

Track and Field

During track and field, athletes learn the different running techniques including sighted guide, guide wire, and tether running. Athletes are encouraged to choose a technique that is most comfortable while they work on their cardiovascular endurance. Athletes are also given the opportunity to learn how to throw shot put and discus, as well as participating in long jumping and sprinting.

Choice Activities

Soccer, basketball, bocce, rollerblading, wrestling, yoga, and dance, are also offered as Choice Activities. Athletes are given time in the evenings to independently choose which activities they would like to participate in. As with all other sports that are offered, coaches attend the chosen activity with their athlete and provide instruction on proper technique and safety with each sport.
